Tuesday, Cohort 2, Week 5

Tech Club, Week 5 Tuesday April 9, 2013

This Tech Club session I had the second grade students use iMovie for the entire time.  They learned how to use iMovie last week so I began by refreshing their memories and then set them loose to create a real video using the film from their anti-bullying puppet performance.  The students seemed to be engaged the whole session and many of them discovered new features that they had not learned the previous week.  I made sure to stress the importance of having music in the appropriate place since they need to be able to hear the speaker of the puppet show throughout their video.  I also encouraged the students to add text and transitions throughout the video.  The students were sharing ideas with each other and collaborating with their neighbors which made for a really fun learning environment.  By the end of the session, most of the students were finished with their videos and they were saved onto their computer.  I was proud of the second graders for being able to produce the cohesive coherent videos that they did.
I think this was a very successful week.  I had spent time prior to the session to edit and clean up the film of their puppet performance so that the project the students were to work on would be simpler.  I arrived at Hyalite at 3:30 and got the cleaned-up video imported onto all of the computers beforehand.  This went much smoother than last week because I used two flash drives so that I had more than one computer importing video at once, instead of using the video camera directly to import the video.  It worked well to have a brief refresher on what iMovie does and some of its important features prior to unleashing the students to make a video.  They were very on task and seemed to be having fun sharing with their neighbor what they were doing or what they had discovered.  I did have to bounce around the room and answer a lot of questions but for the most part, they could help each other if the same question arose.  I had to constantly reinforce the idea that they could not have music playing throughout their whole video because we need to be able to hear what the speakers are saying from the puppet show.  This seemed to be a never ending battle but I think this comes with the age, and the fact that the music feature was by far their favorite in iMovie.  However, I suggested that they use the music feature when they had text such as in a title or credits at the end.
Before the students were allowed to be done, I checked each of their videos to be sure that they had added in some features in order to enhance the film from their puppet show.  Most of the students did very well but a lot of them had to make minor adjustments as to how long their music played for or where they had accidentally inserted something they didn’t mean to.  By the end of the session it seemed pretty clear that the students were exhausted of iMovie and I will keep this in mind for next week’s session.  Since next week is the last week, I will debrief with the students and have them discuss what they have learned about bullying in order to wrap-up the end of Tech Club for this semester.  This project has been a twelve week process through cohort one and two for these second grade students.  To do this, I may have the students use computers to write their own creative stories about bullying and have them share what they have learned.  I also intend to complete the video from the puppet performance on bullying so that Hyalite Elementary can use it to demonstrate what the students have been working on and what they have leaned throughout the unit.
