Yesterday, 2/19/13, was our fourth tech club session with the students at Hyalite Elementary School. I honestly cannot believe how quickly the time is going by! It seems like just yesterday we were walking into Hyalite Elementary School for the first time and observing. I have definitely enjoyed my time thus far at this program, and am learning a lot from the whole experience.
Yesterday, the 2nd grade students began making their puppets. We first reviewed the students' characters and then step-by-step the students began making their puppets. Working together as a class, and making the puppets one step at a time, was definitely a wise decision and even though it may have taken a bit more time, it definitely made the whole puppet making process go by much smoother. In my lesson plan, I had it planned that the students would spend the second portion of our time together creating the rest of the story for our script and the students would type up their ideas on the computer however, making the puppets took longer than I intended and we therefore ran out of time. The students did however, decide that the beginning of the story would take place in the lunchroom before recess while the climax would be when the bully takes the ball away from two students who are playing catch. Lastly, the other students resolve this conflict by inviting the two students to play catch with the rest of them.
Overall, I felt as though the activities went really well. The only thing that was a disappointment was the fact that the students weren't able to get the computers out and begin creating their own specific character lines for the script due to a lack of time. Next class, I hope to more carefully take into consideration time management, and do a better job at making sure the students are getting the listed tasks done as quickly and efficiently as possible.
