On Tuesday February 5, we had our first teaching day. When we got there we found out that due to a large number of students, it would be best to separate into grade levels. Jen took the 2nd graders, Hannah took the 1st graders, and I took the kindergarteners. We started out together talking about the anti-bulling rules. We watched a short movie from McGruff the Crime Dog. At this point the 2nd graders went to another room for their lesson while the kindergarteners and the 1st graders continued reviewing and discussing the rules. We then separated into grades and played short games on the McGruff web site. I discussed with my group where bullying can take place: playground, classroom, lunchroom, home. ect. Last I introduced the video idea and took a vote on where to film it. The majority wanted on the playground.
Some struggles I had was keeping the kids on topic. I forget how easy they get distracted. The success was they stayed busy until there was 2 kids left, then we put the room back in order. I also feel that because we had planned on doing it as a group I was not as prepared as I could have been. I was able to fill time, but I will be more prepared next time.
I am excited for next class. I feel I am prepared to fill the time, I have a back up plan, and I know what to expect with little kindergarteners. I am anxious to see them again and start planning the video.
