On Tuesday, February 5th, we began teaching our first lesson at Hyalite Elementary School. Due to the large amount of students, we ended up breaking into 3 groups, and each of us took a grade. We began by showing a short anti-bullying video in the library and then split up. I took the 2nd graders into a separate classroom and worked with them. First, we discussed the four anti-bullying rules and then the students played two separate anti-bullying games on the laptops. After that, I introduced their final project and they brainstormed ideas about what to do for that. As a group, the students decided to do a puppet show for their final project and to focus on rule #3.
There were definitely several struggles and successes on this first day of teaching at the After School Program. One of the biggest struggles we had was not knowing where the technology was, and that we needed to bring a few of our own technological devices. We definitely learned to be more prepared next time, and to set up the computers before the students get there. One of the biggest successes I personally had, working with the 2nd graders, was well behavior. At the beginning of class, I let the students know my rules for the classroom and also provided a few "hooks" to get their attention. This really seemed to work well, and was a fun yet manageable way to keep the students engaged and on-task.
Next class, I hope to integrate a few more interactive and fun tasks into my lesson plan in order to keep the students engaged and excited about this final project. One of the ways I plan on doing this is by giving the students an "Act of Kindness" board. On the board, there are various acts of kindness listed, such as "sit by someone new at lunch". I think this is a great way to carry out the anti-bullying rules into their everyday lives.
