  1. Our first visit went very well! We took grades 3-5 into the library with Mr. S where he divided the girls and the boys (note that it seems most students are male and have a lot of energy). From there, he had the boys make bridges out of a deck of cards and then see how much weight (marbles) their bridge can hold. The girls got to play a game with math that we were all so impressed with. Once the boys were done with their bridges, the two groups switched. At the end, we added up the weight and the score of the card games for each group. We left still not knowing the outcome! Having the boys vs. girls really gave the group some incentive to focus on the activity and do the best they could.
After seeing how the after school program works, we realized that we need to make sure that we have an organized plan for each day, but we also need to come up with a plan B. This is just a safety net in case one day we cannot get certain materials or if there is just a hiccup.
All in all, we were pretty nervous when we initially got there, but after talking to Beth and Mr. S we came to realize that this is supposed to be fun!
Thank you to everyone! Have a great weekend ☺

  2. Hi Everyone - we have just completed our first full week at the Hyalite School Tech club - I want to complement all of you on the time and attention you have given to your preparation - it shows! Yes, we have run into tech glitches - thus learning the importance of back up plans. Yes, we have had kiddos who did not behave as I expect (I SO apologize for that) - thus learning new management techniques. Yes, you had every child engaged and excited about this project - thus you know that you are on the right track. This success is only possible from preparation, adjusting your lessons when needed, learning who your students are and personalizing your lessons for them. We are all excited at what will be taking place over the next weeks. Keep up the great work everyone and Thanks again. (Tim and Lauren - you will be given the rest of your apology notes next week!)
